Being a former college athlete and current “I workout to keep in shape” kind of athlete, I am no stranger to a protein bar. I used to rely on them back in the day to get me through two-a-days, and intense, peak-of-the-season training.
I have not enjoyed too many protein or energy bars since going gluten-free since 1) The ones I have found tasted like a certain four letter word, and 2) They were not available to me at my local grocery store. But, I recently came into contact with the Marketing Manager of Europa Sports, a wholesale distributor of supplements and health foods, and informed her of my gluten-free protein bar peril. Then, in just over 24 hours, I received one of the best gluten-free packages ever: a large box full of NoGii bars.
Talk about excitement.
I snapped a few pics, found an invoice, gasped at the generosity of Europa Sports for sending me the products free of charge, and began to map out the order in which I would try the bars.
Being that NoGii bars are high in protein, carbs, and other “give me energy so I can go climb a mountain” ingredients, I couldn’t necessarily eat them all in a few days time. This review called for a prolonged period of sampling, paired with a consistent exercise routine for full-effect.
The first NoGii item I tried was the Kids Marshmallow Rice Crisp – 160 calories, 21g of carbohydrates, and 8g of protein. This snack will make your kid the best soccer player on the block with its omega 3’s and all-natural awesomeness. When eating this bar, I forgot about all of the healthiness associated and just thought it tasted like a treat! I don’t know how any gluten-free kid wouldn’t want one of these suckers.
NoGii bar also has a full-throttle, protein-filled, get your butt off the couch bar – the NoGii Super Protein Bar. With 390 calories, 38g of carbohydrates, and 30g of protein, this baby means business. You can’t eat this bar as just a snack, but instead should plan to eat it as a meal replacement, or for fuel if training for something intense. I had 1/2 a bar towards the end of my workday and it fueled me through my evening workout and activities, all the way until 8:30pm!
If you’re not trying to get all SUPER with your protein, try the NoGii, Peanut Butter & Chocolate, High Protein Bar. This bar has 230 calories (a little less macho man than the super protein bar), 20g of carbohydrates, and 20g of protein. I found this to be a great afternoon snack on the days when my lunch was a bit less than desirable, so I wouldn’t be gnawing at my elbow come 5 o’clock.
NoGii also has Paleo bars with 190 calories, 22g of carbohydrates, and 4g of protein. With Nuts About Berries and Nuts about Tropical Fruit as flavors, these will give you the extra boost you need to get to the end of your work day, school day, or workout. I have to say, next to the Kids Marshmallow Rice Crisp, the Nuts About Tropical Fruit Paleo bar was my favorite in the NoGii lineup.
