LUNA Protein Bars are Gluten-Free!

By April 9, 2013 Gluten-Free Products

While I try not to eat protein bars on a daily basis, I do find a need to have them on hand on a busy work day, or to pack in my bag just in case I get held up somewhere. Sometimes it can be hard to find gluten-free bars that you not only like, but don’t cost an arm and a leg. The reason why I like LUNA protein bars is that they taste delicious (because I love all of the chocolaty flavors), but they are also reasonably priced.

I often take advantage of the 10 for $10 sales at my local Kroger store, that way I keep the cost low and have enough bars to last a decent amount of time. My favorite flavor is the Mint Chocolate Chip (because I’m addicted to any combo of chocolate + mint which is why I can’t be trusted with a box of Junior Mints). With 12g of protein and 3g of fiber, LUNA Mint Chocolate Chip protein bars help me to get my mint craving in without leaving behind the guilt that chocolate mint candy would. It’s pretty amazing!

The Chocolate Peanut Butter LUNA protein bar comes in a close second for me. Why? Because Reese’s bars are amazingly delicious, and I kinda, sorta feel like I’m eating one while enjoying the Chocolate Peanut Butter LUNA bar. As the website states, this bar gives “sweet satisfaction in a high protein bar created just for women.” Heck yeah it gives me satisfaction! Yum, yum, yum!

Chocolate, cherry and almonds sound like the ingredients for a delicious baked good, which is why you’ll be happy when you taste them in the form of a protein bar. The Chocolate Cherry Almond LUNA protein bar has “tantalizing” bits of dried cherries and super-fine almonds covered in chocolate amazingness. Seriously, when are they going to start calling these protein bars candy instead because that’s what I seem to be describing! I ate this bar right before a run, because I was unusually hungry one afternoon, and it sure did get the job done!

I don’t think anything flavored Cookie Dough could not taste good, which is why the Cookie Dough LUNA protein bar is pleasing to the palate. Pieces of chocolate chip, cookie dough, and hints of vanilla are all wrapped up into this beauty of a bar, and is sure to be one of the tastier protein-packed foods you’ll eat!

If you haven’t hopped on the LUNA protein bar train yet, I highly recommend it. Even though the website is marketed towards women, I don’t think any fella should be afraid to take advantage of these. Like I said, they’re available at regular grocery stores, so you won’t have to make a separate trip to the health food store, and you can even get them on sale from time-to-time. (Yes, gluten-free sale items DO exist!)

Have you tried LUNA protein bars yet? What’s YOUR favorite flavor?

Bee Nut Free Gluten-Free Snacks

By April 2, 2013 Gluten-Free Products

Let’s face it; we all live the on-the-go lifestyle. This means that most of us have to turn to different gluten-free snacks every now and then to help us start or make it through the day. I received a few lovely samples of Bee Nut Free gluten-free granola bars, cookies, and trail mix a couple weeks ago that are perfect for the grab-and-go situation. I was excited to try a different brand of gluten-free products because no one likes eating the same-old, same-old, week after week.

Bee Nut Free offers granola bars, cookies, and trail mix that are all nut-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free. The products are produced on dedicated equipment so the fear of cross contamination is not there (thank heavens)! There are different granola bar and “energy bar bites” flavors to choose from, as well as some scrumptious, shortbread-cookie-ish Sunny Honey Cookie Bites. The Trails End Trail Mix is perfect for that afternoon pick-me-up, and is easy to pack on the go.

The granola bar flavors I tried were Chocolate Chip, Ten Mile Tropical, Cranberry Citrus, and Sunflower Fig Ginger. My personal favorite flavor was surprisingly the Ten Mile Tropcial, which I ironically ate before taking a long, almost-ten-mile run! The chocolate chip granola bar came in a close second simply because I love the taste of anything with the flavor “Chocolate Chip”.

The Trails End Trail Mix is the perfect thing to throw in your bag to have on hand when hunger strikes. Its combination of ingredients is delicious, including pieces of the chocolate chip granola bar, blueberries, banana chips and pumpkin seeds.

The gluten-free Sun Honey Cookie Drops are free of milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, but certainly not taste! These little cookie bites are perfect to pop in your mouth for a little treat from time-to-time.

If you’re interested in trying a new brand of gluten-free granola bars or trail mix, I recommend Bee Nut Free. The only criticism that I have is the packaging of the products. The bags that the products come in are a plastic type of bag that is rather difficult to open without causing a mess (picture trail mix flying everywhere). I opened my products with scissors, but if you were on-the-go, it might be more difficult. As long as Bee Nut Free gets this minor kink worked out, they get an A+ in my book!

Cappello’s Gluten-Free Noodles

By March 28, 2013 Gluten-Free Products

Throughout this post you might think that I am over-exaggerating because I will continually describe these gluten-free noodles as the best thing ever. Just know that I am not, and your taste-buds would be the happiest they have ever been if you ordered yourself some of this gourmet greatness.

Cappello’s gluten-free pasta is literally the best thing you will eat in your gluten-free life. I’m sorry to every other brand that’s out there, but this stuff is the bomb diggity. The company’s mission is to “Provide fresh, uniquely delicious options for gourmet food-lovers, healthy eaters, and people with dietary restrictions.” Mission accomplished.

If you order these gluten-free noodles, they will come fresh to your doorstep in an eco-friendly container with dry ice. You cook the noodles for less than a minute and voila, your pasta is ready to go! The lasagna noodles are especially fantastic because you get to skip that entire step where you have to pre-cook the noodles before actually making the lasagna. The gnocchi is amazing because it’s gluten-free gnocchi, duh. And the fettuccine noodles are something out of this world. Just look at the photos below and tell me these products don’t look like heaven.

Gluten-Free Fettuccine

I used Cappello’s gluten-free fettuccine noodles in a pesto chicken pasta recipe. I personally dealt with the issue of self-control because I found it difficult to not eat all of the noodles before the rest of the meal was even cooked. You simply can’t resist. The noodles then obviously made for the perfect dinner. We chose to be a bit classy by making the pesto sauce with them, but they taste great if you just put some pasta marina sauce on them, too.

Gluten-Free Gnocchi

Before trying Cappello’s gluten-free gnocchi, I never really explored this potato-filled pasta. But, what I now know about this particular Italian noodle is that it tastes pretty darn delicious. My mom found a recipe for gluten-free chicken meatballs so we decided to make some of those + a sauce to eat with the gnocchi, in attempts to get the real “gnocchi taste”. I understand that there are several dishes you can make with gnocchi, and I’m sure many of you former gnocchi lovers are itching to whip something up! Well, now you have the chance – I assure you that Cappello’s gluten-free gnocchi is just what you’re looking for.

Gluten-Free Lasagna

If taste-buds could cry, mine would have when I ate gluten-free lasagna made with Cappello’s gourmet noodles. It was the best lasagna I’ve ever had…better than the stuff I ate back in the gluten-filled days, scouts honor! My mom is even more in love with Cappello’s than I am. After being gluten-free for over five years, Cappello’s lasagna noodles are her favorite product yet. That has to mean something, right?!

Cappello's Lasagna

Please, please, please take my advice and order this gluten-free, grain-free pasta. You can even get 10% off if you use the promo code GFreeLaura! I know, you’re welcome.

You will not regret the purchase, and I’m 99.9-percent sure that you will be thanking me afterward.

Have you become a Cappello’s believer yet? If not, what’s holding you back?

KIND Gluten-Free Bars Review and Giveaway

By March 18, 2013 Gluten-Free Products

Heaven came knocking on my door last week and left a box of KIND gluten-free bars and granola. Talk about me being on cloud nine.

KIND bars

If you’re gluten-free and haven’t heard of KIND yet, you must be living under a rock. I found about KIND bars during my first year of eating gluten-free. I’ve never been too much of a nut lover, so I was initially skeptical of these bars. I didn’t want to be eating bird food, ya know? But I was pleasantly surprised after I ate my first KIND bar. It may look like it is just another “health nut” bar, but it is so much more than that.

With flavors like Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate and Dark Chocolate Cinnamon Pecan (personal favorite), you really can’t go wrong. And if you don’t dig the whole chocolate thing as much as I do, KIND has you covered with several other flavors including Pomegranate Blueberry Pistachio (more like pistachi-WHOA), and Cranberry Almond. Seriously, think of any fruit and nut combination and it’s probably available on KIND’s list.

I enjoy these bars for a variety of reasons and not just the taste. There are several occasions where I’ve had to grab on the go while rushing from meeting to meeting, and the KIND bars don’t make me feel guilty like other snack bars too. I get the taste I want (with some chocolate of course) while I receive quality nutrients.

I especially like these bars for fuel before a workout or run. There’s a fine line between eating too little and being famished after a run, and eating too much and then regretting it during the run. KIND has solved that problem for me. Just this morning I grabbed a KIND bar to eat about 25 minutes before I went on a long run and it was the absolute perfect amount of fuel that I needed.

KIND also has gluten-free granola and let me tell you, this stuff is the bomb. I personally don’t like yogurt (it’s never agreed with me), but I imagine that this is the perfect topping for your morning serving of Greek yogurt and fruit! I simply ate the granola straight from the bag and ran into the problem of “I can’t stop eating this” and had to eventually hide it deep in the pantry.

I think I am going to mix up a fun medley with the granola and add in some nuts, raisins, and if I’m really feeling crazy, some m&m’s! Now doesn’t that sound delicious?!

But, enough about my opinion on KIND bars and granola, I want to know YOUR opinion! And, GUESS WHAT? You have a pretty darn good chance at winning a box full of KIND goodies by entering my giveaway! How do you do this? Well, it’s actually pretty simple:

Adding a Gluten-Free Product to My Arsenal

By March 10, 2013 Gluten-Free Products

I have been gluten-free for almost four years, so I think it’s safe to say that I know my way around the gluten-free aisle at the grocery store. I also feel like I have a pretty good handle on what brands are worth buying, which products are best for certain recipes, and what my taste-buds like in general. But, I recently found that even I can benefit from the discovery aspect that the Taste Guru box-of-the-month provides.

I started to work with Taste Guru last month (doing some blogging, sending a tweet here & there), and was sent my very own Taste Guru box so I would know exactly what it was like. The box included Canyon Bakehouse muffins, some Beautiful Sweets Valentine’s Day cookies, Popcorn Indiana Kettle Corn, A Taste of Thai Spicy Peanut Bake, Chebe Focaccia Mix, and Mezzetta Roasted Bell Pepper and Chipotle Sandwich Spread.

I had already eaten a few of the box items throughout my years, and I enjoyed having them once again because they are quality products. But the part that I enjoyed most about the Taste Guru box was getting items that I would never pick up myself at the grocery store. Prime example: Mezzetta Sandwich Spread.

Mezzetta Sandwich Spread

Sandwich spread is one product I would never even look for at the store. I rarely put condiments on my sandwiches and I always thought it was because that’s just how my taste-buds worked. But, Taste Guru helped me to realize that I was wrong. I LOVE SANDWICH SPREAD! It is the discovery of the century for me. Since receiving the box, I have been looking for different ways to use it and reasons to eat sandwiches. I’m literally obsessed with it now.

So the point of this post is that even if you’ve been gluten-free for many years, and you feel like you know everything about your options, you don’t. There are always new ways to liven up your diet, and bring your food to life. I am confident that Taste Guru boxes will help me to do this, while also giving me the chance to enjoy old favorites as well!

Is there a gluten-free product that you recently discovered? How did you come across it?

kitch+table Gluten-Free Pizza Crust

By March 8, 2013 Gluten-Free Products

I recently received a special package from Jessica at kitch+table that was filled with g-free love in the form of a pizza crust.

As you know, I love, love, LOVE kitch+table mixes, and I will recommend them to just about anyone with functioning taste-buds. Two of the biggest gluten-free obstacles were overcome by this company because both the brownie mix and the pizza mix are off the chain. I reviewed the products a few months back and have been in contact with the company owner, Jessica, ever since.

So when I got a super sweet email from Jessica asking for my opinion on a new project she had been working on, I was instantly excited for her. Having received such great feedback in regards to her pizza crusts, Jessica decided to go down the pre-made route and test out ready-to-bake gluten-free pizza crusts that come in a vacuum-sealed bag. My first response to her email was, “Please let me review the crust!”

Seriously, any chance I can get to eat kitch+table products, I take.

I got the crust in the mail a few days later and when I opened up the box it was sent in, there was a huge smile on my face. Is kitch+table good at branding, or is kitch+table good at branding? Cutest.Packaging.Ever.

kitch+table package

Directions are pretty simple – top with whatever your heart desires; bake at 425 degrees for 14-18 minutes. Since I knew how amazing this product would be, I wanted to top it with amazing ingredients. So that’s when I found a recipe for Bacon, Tomato and Arugula Pizza. Yes, I said bacon.

Pizza Toppings

When the pizza came out of the oven I was so freaking excited to eat it! 1) I’ve had the kitch+table product before so I knew it would be fantastic  2) I was starving!

So my mother and I proceeded to eat the entire thing. Whoopsies. (There’s this thing called “self-control” that I clearly do not have.)

My mom made a statement that pretty much sums up the crust. She said, “There’s just something about the crust. Maybe the seasoning? I don’t know. It’s just SO good!”

I truly don’t know what else to say because that is basically it – kitch+table crust is crazy good, just like the package states! You HAVE to order some for yourself!
